What Will Your Business Look Like Post Covid-19?

This Is Your Window Of Opportunity…

I really hope you are getting to grips with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on your personal and business life. Before I get onto my points about what your business will look like post Covid-19, I wanted to give you an overview of what my experience has been as I feel it will probably be quite relatable to you as a business owner.

The last 4 weeks have felt like a massive mix of uncertainty, fear, worry, some government support and a dawning realisation that the impact is going to be enormous for many of us.

Over this period, I have been at home with my wife and daughter. We’ve got close relatives stuck on their own around the country, including a 90+ year old relative with dementia in a care home. So its been worrying and a phone or Skype call can’t make up for giving people a hug of support.

From a business point of view, I have been busy supporting my clients either on a 1-2-1 basis or via my peer group which has been a safe haven for many of these business owners. My wife has become an expert on furloughing so has often joined me on calls – she does employment law. I have also started up a free virtual peer group to provide a space for business owners to share their learning and experience of what we are going through.

Probably like you, I have been deluged with lots of webinar invites by business experts who seem to know what we should be doing. I don’t think anybody has the answer to all that is going on. Yes, there’s some useful advice to take onboard, but I feel we are in a time where collectively pulling together is the way forward. The greatest example of that is the way this nation is supporting the NHS. Whether its manufacturers converting their factories to make PPE or good people like Captain Tom Moore raising money to help the NHS or all of us giving emotional support to NHS staff through our Thursday clap.

My response to collectively pulling together is that free virtual peer group I mentioned earlier.

We have met twice, about 10 to 12 business owners attend, and I sense a strong desire from the attendees to help each other. My role is to help the group meet, chair the meeting and throw in some ideas to help the discussion. There is some peer pressure to take action from the advice given. You’re welcome to give it a go, say your piece, hear from others and then decide if it is for you.

I guess I’m not the only one, but these last few weeks have got me thinking, usually during my daily walk around Ossett and Horbury. Strange as this may seem, now could be the time, before you restart your business as it was before, to rebuild it the way you want it to be…

If Your House Got Damaged By A Disaster, You Would Need To Rebuild…

Would you rebuild it exactly as it was? Or would you build something you’ve always dreamed of in its place?

The Covid-19 crisis may still be pummelling your business, but there will come a time when the storm starts to ebb.

That’s why you have a unique window of opportunity right now…

Without the forces of inertia pushing you in the direction you’ve always gone, you have a moment to decide where you want to be. You have a window of opportunity to rethink how you approach your company — to rebuild your business into what you’ve always dreamed it could be before little decisions, stacked on top of each other, became too hard to undo.

Miss this moment and the forces of business and life will take hold again, pushing you in a direction you may not want to go……now is a unique moment to re-assess everything right down to what you sell and to whom.

You may think I’m talking rubbish or not in the real world. For a minute consider if you could:

  • Prune the products and services that suck resources, complicate your life and may not add any value to your business;
  • Create the processes and procedures that make business easier to do and demand less of your time;
  • Decide how you want to market your products and create a plan and some content now before you get busy again;
  • Talk to your senior team members about them taking on more responsibility;
  • Talk to your staff about the new ways of working that you want to introduce.

In fact, now is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to re-focus your business on what you want it to be…
